Metal Shark’s 70 Defiant is a purpose-built, next-generation welded aluminum monohull fireboat designed by Metal Shark’s in-house engineering team utilizing a military-proven hull form. Part of Metal Shark’s popular and proven line of American made custom firefighting vessels, this specialized craft features a unique layout designed for firefighters. Metal Shark works directly with its fireboat customers to assure that key particulars of each vessel are optimized to enhance that department’s operational readiness. The result of the latest thinking in fireboat design, the 70 Defiant will provide a significant capability boost for its operator across the full spectrum of fire rescue, command and control, and other emergency response missions. This vessel utilizes Metal Shark’s globally proven Defiant-class hull design, with hundreds of parent-class vessels in service worldwide. The 70 Defiant offers unmatched capability, extended range and duration, large crew capacity, and the ability to easily carry a formidable array of fire fighting equipment. Like all Metal Sharks, this highly capable platform may be fully customized to meet virtually any mission requirement.

Hull Design & Construction

The 70 Defiant features a proven Metal Shark hull design that has been engineered and built to precise tolerances. To achieve its superior hull life rating, the vessel’s hull, deck, and superstructure are composed entirely of heavy, welded plates of premium 5086 aluminum-magnesium alloy. The Defiant-class running surface has been designed for maximum efficiency and performance. This efficiency, combined with the vessel’s durable construction, results in the lowest possible operational costs while at the same time assuring maximum operability. Metal Shark offers the 70 Defiant with a wide range of propulsion packages enabling the vessel to achieve top speeds of 45+ knots.

Deck Layout

The 70 Defiant ushers in a new era of capability, with a modern, crew-friendly layout that allows firefighters to perform their work more safely and efficiently. Crews aboard the 70 Defiant enjoy smartly-configured, wide-open work spaces that facilitate safe and surefooted movement from bow to stern. Wide, non-skid walkways feature low-level LED lighting for night missions, and careful consideration has been given to the placement of all rails and grab handles. Heavy emphasis has been placed on accessibility and ease of use, resulting in a purpose-built fire fighting machine with next-level capabilities and a crew-friendly layout that fire fighters will love.

Like all of Metal Shark’s fireboat offerings, the 70 Defiant employs “pillarless” glass for unmatched all-weather operability and safety. This design drastically improves the view from the helm by reducing the dangerous blind spots commonly found on the industry’s legacy fireboat offerings that employ smaller, framed windows. Pillarless glass technology, proven extensively on Metal Shark’s military and law enforcement patrol boats, increases visibility and awareness. Firefighters and other emergency responders appreciate the near 360-degree view from a Metal Shark pilothouse, especially while operating during night missions or other periods of reduced visibility. The elevated helm affords an outstanding view, facilitating navigation and maneuvering in multi-vessel fire fighting operations. The 70 Defiant’s pilothouse space is custom configurable to suit any mission profile, with multiple options for crew seating and accommodations areas, workstations, etc.

Crew Accommodations

The 70 Defiant offers large belowdecks crew quarters that may be configured to suit specific mission profiles. Typical accommodations include multiple bunks forward, full galley, enclosed head and hanging lockers. A mid-cabin offers ample space for additional bunking or multi-use storage space. Sleeping accommodations are separated from the pilothouse, allowing off-watch crew to rest without disturbing operations.

Custom Capability

The 70 Defiant may be fully customized to suit a wide range of mission requirements. From fire pumps and monitors to foam reservoirs, hydrant connections, Command and Control communications systems, and positive-pressure Chemical, Radiological, Biological, Nuclear, and high-yield Explosive (CBRNE) crew protection systems, Metal Shark is adept at the seamless integration of tactical firefighting hardware.
