The Metal Shark 45 Defiant Fire Rescue is a state of the art welded aluminum monohull vessel designed for fire fighting, command and control operations, and other emergency response missions. Utilizing Metal Shark’s Defiant-class hull design, which has been extensively tested and proven with hundreds of parent-class vessels in service worldwide, the 45 Defiant is surprisingly nimble given its formidable size and heft. The 45 Defiant offers impressive performance, and is equally capable in coastal as well as offshore environments, where it handles heavy seas with poise and balance. Like all Metal Sharks, each 45 Defiant Fire Rescue vessel is specially tailored to meet the specific needs of the customer. Depending on agency need, configuration, features, and layout may differ substantially from the vessel shown here

Hull Design & Construction

The 45 Defiant features a proven Metal Shark hull design that has been engineered and built to precise tolerances. To achieve its superior hull life rating, the vessel’s hull, deck, and superstructure are composed entirely of heavy, precision-welded plates of corrosion-resistant 5086 aluminum-magnesium alloy. The Defiant-class running surface has been designed for maximum efficiency and performance. This efficiency, combined with the vessel’s durable construction, results in the lowest possible operating cost while at the same time assuring maximum performance. Thanks to its wide beam, pronounced reverse chines, and ample heft, the 45 Defiant is exceptionally stable while underway, at rest, or pumping water. Somewhat surprising given its size, the 45 Defiant offers exceptional performance and maneuverability and is a highly capable first responder. To meet specific mission requirements, the 55 Defiant may be equipped with inboards, water jets, or pod propulsion systems.

Deck Layout

The 45 Defiant’s spacious arrangement features wide-open work spaces that facilitate easy 360-degree crew movement around the boat. Wide, non-skid walkways feature low-level LED lighting for night missions, and crew members will find hand rails and grab handles within easy reach at all times. Port and starboard dive recesses and a full-width transom platform provide easy access to and from the water. Heavy duty rub rail provides impact protection, and the vessel may be equipped with a urethane-sheathed closed-cell foam collar for additional fendering capability. Forward pusher knees are available to provide extra versatility.

Pilothouse

Metal Shark’s signature “pillarless” glass pilothouse sets the industry standard for visibility and safety. Proven extensively on Metal Shark’s military and law enforcement patrol boats and utilized on all Metal Shark pilothouse fireboats, this design drastically improves the view from the helm by reducing the dangerous blind spots commonly found on conventional pilothouse vessels. Firefighters and other emergency responders appreciate the near 360-degree view from a Metal Shark pilothouse, especially while on night missions or operating during other periods of reduced visibility.

Firefighters will find all controls for the vessel’s propulsion systems, fire fighting equipment, and other onboard systems within easy reach thanks to the 45 Defiant’s large port and starboard helm stations. These offer ample room for the installation of navigation electronics and controls for fire pumps and remote-operated monitors.

Crew Accommodations

The vessel shown here is equipped with basic seating for six. Seating may be configured to suit specific crew requirements. Metal Shark offers a wide range of options including shock mitigating military seating and water ambulance seating with stretcher bunks.

Below, the 45 Defiant features a large convertible V-berth with dinette table, a galley, and an enclosed head compartment. A large mid-cabin area may be configured with additional bunks or used as a multi-use storage area

Custom Capability

The 45 Defiant may be fully customized to suit a wide range of mission requirements. From fire pumps and monitors to foam reservoirs, hydrant connections, Command and Control communications systems, and positive-pressure Chemical, Radiological, Biological, Nuclear, and high-yield Explosive (CBRNE) crew protection systems, Metal Shark is adept at the seamless integration of tactical firefighting hardware.
