The “Flying Hub II” shown here is a 40-foot custom welded-aluminum passenger vessel designed by Jutson Marine Design and built by Metal Shark for a Florida-based fishing and tour boat operator. This innovative vessel features a highly efficient foil-assisted catamaran hull and has been built to USCG Subchapter T standards.

Hull Design

This custom vessel features a first-in-class foil-assisted catamaran hull. Specially engineered forward and aft transverse hydrofoils elevate the hull at planing speeds, which substantially reduces drag. The result is significantly increased performance and fuel economy with modest power requirements. This fully welded vessel has been constructed of 5086 aluminum alloy and is able to withstand the use and abuse of year-round commercial operation in an unforgiving saltwater environment. Equipped with twin 350-HP Yamaha four-stroke outboard engines, the vessel reaches speeds in excess of 35 knots. A wide range of power options and propulsion types are available.

Deck Layout

The vessel featured here has been specially configured for fishing excursions and seats up to 20 passengers. Rod holders, beverage holders, tackle storage, bait prep stations, live wells, fish boxes, and ample cooler space have all been provided. Large integrated steps in the forward cockpit provide surefooted access to the foredeck, where safety rails assure easy access to the boarding platform. The vessel has been designed with extended deep water fishing trips to the Florida Middle Grounds, approximately 100 miles off the West Coast of Florida, in mind. For such excursions, the Flying Hub II has been equipped with power outlets for electric reels, with discrete white/red LED night lighting provided throughout.

Seating

This vessel has been equipped with custom, padded bench seating with backrests for 20 passengers beneath a large canopy. Grab rails are within easy reach, and an available canvas curtain enclosure package enables year-round all-weather operation. This seating layout allows the vessel to be utilized as a charter fishing boat and also a passenger ferry. Like all Metal Sharks, the 40 Cat is a fully custom platform that may be fully tailored to suit individual requirements. A full range of seating options are available.

Helm

The 40 Cat has been equipped with an elevated helm that allows the operator to easily and safely operate the vessel while also keeping an eye on passengers and crew. A large three-panel, full-height glass windshield offers outstanding visibility, while the integrated aluminum T-top provides protection from the elements. An overhead electronics pod, coupled with a large dash area, easily accommodate a full suite of navigation electronics. A wide range of helm seat options are available. For passenger comfort, the console houses a roomy private head with freshwater sink and marine toilet.
